Dr. Who's Reading Room

Laura Carlo is a host over at 99.5 All Classical, a project of WGBH in the Greater Boston area. I notice that in the morning she often likes to play this pair of tunes. I never hit the snooze when she does, as it is a sweet way to way up.

For a while Fleisher had a neurological disability that did not allow him to use both of his hands. You might imagine how traumatic that was and how triumphant that return in this album. Today I am grateful for my abilities, and for artists who bring such sweetness into our days.

Oh, “because of reasons,” this in-your-face lyric by the Beastie Boys is stuck in my head “It takes time to build / It takes a second to wreck it.”

Pierce Pettis, “Chase the Buffalo

I cannot name this passion
Don’t know where this stuff comes from
Maybe its a trail of tears
Or just a trail of crumbs
But there is music in all this
It is all material
Before the beauty melts like snow
Chase the buffalo

On the way home from a, dare I say, well-deserved chillout day, a Community Day of faculty and staff appreciation at Endicott College, this little gem popped up on my iPod.

This cover of the old Roxy Music tune, construed as Latin Jazz, fit the seaside day quite perfectly. Bliss.

It figures it would rain the day I start teaching my online course.

it’s raining sheets of rain everything is cold and wet
nobody’s going out of doors
they’re all at home living it up on the internet
so i guess nobody’s lonely any more
‘cept you and me babe ‘cept you and me”

Lyrics here. I have weighed in before on this topic.

“Wait a minute now,
everybody just hold it.
Let’s think about this.
Whoa, whoa now.
Ain’t there no place away?”

Be kind to one another in the impassioned pursuit of your truths.
