Self-injury awareness update

I’ve updated my post on Self-Injury Awareness Day to include material from the Diane Rehm Show, which had a program about self-injury today. Also available as a podcast, the show is a must-listen for friends and family members of those who self-injury, or for anyone who works with adolescents and young adults. I also discovered that FirstSigns has a Tumblog. Awareness is better than ignorance. I have much gratitude to the friend who alerted me about the program as it aired.

Dear Pablo: I have noticed that a lot of yoga mats are made from PVC. Isn’t that bad? What should I look for in a healthy, planet-friendly yoga mat?

The health effects of corn syrup have been debated, and many Americans now generally believe that corn syrup may not be the best sweetening choice for their health. So what does the Corn Refiners Association do? Well, change the name of course.

The Corn Refiners Association has asked the FDA to rename ‘corn syrup‘ as ‘corn sugar‘. The renaming may take years to be officially allowed on food labels, but the CRA is already using it in advertising.

A thoughtful and thorough analysis of a current trend.

While serious athletes are probably better off hydrating with sports drinks, coconut water’s okay for light workouts and everyday activity. That most coconut waters contain only one ingredient is a nice plus, especially considering the strange hues and artificial flavors common in sports drinks. Environmentally speaking, coconut water is actually not bad. So far. But here’s what’s not sustainable: going to seven supermarkets to find my coconut fix. I’ll try to restrain myself.

Focus on this: peer-reviewed. Read it and weep, or rejoice, as you may prefer.

Ooh, James Dobson is going to hate this: A new study has found that the kids of lesbian parents turn out just as well-adjusted as their peers. What’s more, they have fewer behavioral problems and greater self-confidence. That is to say, lesbian parents not only do just as well as hetero households on the child-rearing front, but they actually manage to do some things better. Who’s “focusing on the family” now, huh?

The truth is, we don’t know why these kids fared better in certain behavioral respects — and it might not have to do with having lesbian parents, per se. One factor that seems awfully important here is that these pregnancies were all planned. Like, really, really planned. There were no forgotten pills, broken condoms or one too many glasses of red wine; these women had to actively seek out sperm donors and then undergo artificial insemination. It’s always possible these results have less to do with gay parenting than with planned parenting — not that ultra-conservatives would find that any less upsetting.
