This was another part of the drivetime soundtrack. As I passed over Interstate 93, I was so grateful I did not have to drive into Boston, though all of us were heading into the great maw in our future. Karsh Kale’s glitchy breakbeats blend well with traditional percussion, contrasting in turn with the underlying lullaby. This is a deliciously richly textured piece, the aural equivalent of some galub jamun. Jai Ma!

Karsh Kale is such an aural alchemist. I was so pleased to find this among this morning’s podcasts. I loved his work on Anoushka Shankar’s Breathing Under Water. Find some such joy today, everyone.

A pioneer of global fusion and Bollywood, composer Karsh Kale finds inspiration in moments between the madness. Today’s Top Tune, “Joy,” which he wrote after his experience at Burning Man, is a case in point. It’s an ode to the sunrise, from his CD, Cinema.

I just discovered this gem in my iTunes playlist (it’s two years old). It’s an Echoes interview with Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale about their collaboration Breathing Under Water, which also features Sting, and Shankar’s sister Norah Jones. If you were to look up the word mashup in the dictionary, this album cover would be the picture.
