“Waking up the global warming way…” - Big Audio Dynamite, “The Globe”

Katia has weakened into a tropical storm with sustained winds now at 70 mph; re-strengthening is anticipated through tomorrow. Some dry air and a little wind shear ahead of the storm has likely caused the weakening. Nonetheless, Katia is forecast to gradually strengthen into a major hurricane through this weekend as wind shear currently ahead of the storm diminishes; warm water underneath the storm will provide the fuel for further intensification as well. Although Katia has the potential to become a major hurricane (a hurricane with Category 3 status or higher), no direct impact to land will occur through at least early next week. Katia will send swells and rough surf to north and east facing shores of the Lesser Antilles as soon as Friday. By next week, Bermuda will be at risk for some direct impacts from Katia as the storm is expected to make an eventual curve to the north and northeast. All indications at this point suggest Katia will not be a threat to the United States, with the exception of increasing the surf and rip current risk along the East Coast next week.

…RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM EDT THIS EVENING…
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A RED FLAG WARNING FOR NORTHERN CONNECTICUT…RHODE ISLAND…AND MOST OF MASSACHUSETTS…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM EDT THIS EVENING.
DRY NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING TO 25 TO 30 MPH WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT MUCH OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND TODAY. SINGLE DIGIT DEWPOINTS WILL RESULT IN MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITIES BETWEEN 20 AND 25 PERCENT. THESE CONDITIONS WILL RESULT IN AN ELEVATED FIRE SPREAD POTENTIAL IN SNOW FREE LOCATIONS.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW…OR WILL SHORTLY. A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS…LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY…AND WARM TEMPERATURES WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL.

Though I wish the NWS forecasts would not shout so—it’s about them being in ALL CAPS—I’m relieved in this case they are.

It’s a cold, dry early spring here, folks, and we thirst for warm rains.

Colds and flu like dry, too friends, so forewarned is forearmed (heh). Take precautions.

Be careful out there, especially those of you traveling for the holiday.

A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM TO 6 PM EST WEDNESDAY.

* LOCATIONS…SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE…NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS.

* WINDS…SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS 18 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS 40 TO 50 MPH.

* TIMING…WINDS WILL PICK UP SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE AND PEAK AROUND MIDDAY.

* IMPACTS…WINDS MAY DOWN SMALL TREE LIMBS AND BRANCHES… CAUSING ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES. DRIVING MAY ALSO BE DIFFICULT… PARTICULARLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS ARE FORECAST TO BE 31 TO 39 MPH OR GUSTS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 46 AND 57 MPH. WINDS THIS STRONG ARE CAPABLE OF DOWNING SMALL TREE LIMBS AND BRANCHES…POSSIBLY CAUSING ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES. DRIVING CAN ALSO BE DIFFICULT…ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

Chewable breeze & blessed rain

accuwxboston:

Today: Not as warm but humid; a few morning showers followed by rain and a thunderstorm this afternoon with a high of 77°F
Tonight: Partly cloudy with a shower or thunderstorm in spots early this evening, then areas of fog late with a low of 68°F

Relief!

(With apologies to those with weekend plans for characterizing it that way.)

accuwxboston:

Today: Partial sunshine with a shower or thunderstorm in the area this afternoon with a high of 82°F
Tonight: Partly cloudy with a low of 69°F

The Fog of Forecasts

The last time I reblogged the AccuWeather Forecast, it didn’t pan out at all. They said it would be 85°F, and we ended up in the mid-90s. Should I trust this “high of 88°F,” essentially a break in the heat wave, or should I expect more of the same?

accuwxboston:

Today: Patchy fog this morning; otherwise, very warm with intervals of clouds and sunshine with a high of 88°F
Tonight: Mostly cloudy and humid with a low of 70°F

(Relative) “Relief” not Rewind

I was expecting a repeat of yesterday’s command weather performance, but apparently it won’t be so bad. Relatively speaking, this represents relief. But I’d still check on those elderly neighbors.

accuwxboston:

Today: Humid with times of clouds and sun with a high of 85°F
Tonight: Partly cloudy and humid with a low of 72°F
